If you participated in the recent 2025 New York City Marathon or cheered on participants from the sidelines, you are likely already envisioning yourself crossing that iconic starting line on Staten Island for next year’s race. Certainly, thousands share this passionate aspiration for one of the most renowned marathons in the world.

The NYC Marathon is no ordinary race. Spanning 26.2 miles through the vibrant streets of New York City, it garners over 50,000 eager participants annually, solidifying its status as the largest marathon globally. However, navigating the registration process is anything but simple; finding a way into this sought-after marathon can be immensely challenging due to an ultra-selective entry system.

For the 2025 marathon, it was reported that only 2 to 3 percent of applicants secured a race bib through the non-guaranteed entry system, making it one of the most competitive races to enter. If you’re among those dreaming of running the next edition, we’ve compiled an official list of entry methods recognized by New York Road Runners (NYRR) to help you successfully navigate the registration process.

Entry Drawing: The Luck Factor

One of the primary ways to enter the NYC Marathon is through the entry drawing. For the upcoming 2025 race, the application dates were as follows:

  • Applications opened on February 4
  • The application window closed on February 25
  • The drawing took place, and participants were notified of their status by March 4

In 2025, more than 200,000 hopeful runners applied, yet only about 2 to 3 percent managed to get accepted—a level of selectivity comparable to top-tier universities. If you’re eager to test your luck, keep an eye out for the open registration window next February.

To apply, it doesn’t cost a penny, but if selected, non-NYRR members can expect to pay a little over $300. Current NYRR members also have a chance at a secondary drawing, ensuring another pathway to secure an entry. Additional information about this drawing can be found on the NYRR website.

Join Team for Kids

An alternative route to gain entry is by participating in the Team for Kids program. This initiative raises funds for youth programming through NYRR, and by committing to raise $3,000, runners are guaranteed a spot in the race. Pledging to support this cause not only provides you with a sure entry into the marathon, but it also allows you to contribute to the community. More than 4,000 runners participate annually via this program.

Compete for Charity

Organizations also acquire blocks of guaranteed entries ahead of time, delivering another avenue for aspiring marathoners wishing to run for a cause. After the list of official partners is released, you can coordinate with these charities to cement your spot. While fundraising deadlines and quotas can differ, this option could serve as your best chance for a last-minute entry while benefitting a meaningful cause. For more details, check out the official charity page.

International Trip Program (ITP)

If you hail from outside the United States, there’s a possibility of securing a guaranteed entry via the International Travel Partner (ITP) program. Under this arrangement, recognized travel packages include accommodation, airfare, and, naturally, secured entry to the race. For comprehensive details, visit the NYRR International Tour Operators page.

Veteran Runners: A Special Privilege

Runners with an impressive track record of completing 15 or more NYC Marathons enjoy the privilege of automatic entry into future races. If that description fits you, congratulations! If not, perhaps consider channeling your energy to accumulate that experience in the upcoming years.

Qualifying Times: Earn Your Way In

Another legitimate entry method is by achieving a qualifying time in recognized NYRR races. Official times from designated events, which you can find detailed in NYRR guidelines, can enable you to guarantee your entry. The qualifying window runs from January 1 to December 31, 2025, and includes races like:

  • Fred Lebow Manhattan Half
  • NYC Half
  • Brooklyn Half

Be mindful that achieving a qualifying time at a non-NYRR marathon won’t guarantee entry; fast times will only be accepted based on rankings in gender and age categories.

The 9+1 Program: Race Your Way To Entry

NYRR also offers a unique 9+1 program, where runners can gain guaranteed entry into the next NYC Marathon by competing in nine or more NYRR races and volunteering at one throughout the year. This initiative encourages community involvement alongside your marathon ambitions.

Virtual Racing for All

In light of recent adaptations, mac participants who registered for a virtual race and completed it will receive guaranteed entry into the next year’s NYC Marathon. This method not only allows you to secure a spot but also offers a flexible option to engage in a marathon experience on your own terms.

Whether you aim to qualify directly, run for charity, or participate in one of the structured programs, understanding these various entry pathways can enhance your chances of experiencing the thrill of the NYC Marathon. Ensure that you keep track of deadlines and requirements leading up to the 2026 race, and may your preparations lead you to that coveted bib in the coming year.

For more insights into the NYC Marathon and its entry options, check the official NYRR website.
