Allie McLaughlin’s Passion for Mountain Running

Allie McLaughlin is a prominent figure in the mountain running community, having participated in the Broken Arrow Skyrace every year since 2021. In a recent interview, she shared insights on her journey through the sport, her affinity for the Broken Arrow races, and her transition back to shorter-distance events after trying some 50-kilometer races. Not to be forgotten, her beloved dogs, Harley and Paha, made special appearances during the conversation.

Early Career and Accomplishments

McLaughlin’s journey into mountain and trail running began in earnest after she graduated from CU Boulder in February 2013. Her first major experience came in 2014 with the Pikes Peak Ascent, where she earned a spot on the U.S. team—a great milestone that marked the beginning of her long-lasting career in the sport. Fast forward eleven years, and she has returned to the U.S. team once more, demonstrating her adeptness and growth in mountain running.

Return to Shorter Distances

Over the years, McLaughlin dabbled in longer races, successfully competing in various 50k events. However, she has recently decided to return to her roots in shorter-distance racing, particularly marathons and races tapering under two hours. This shift allows her to focus on maintaining her speed and engaging with the competitive aspects of the sport.

The Draw of Broken Arrow

One of the main attractions of the Broken Arrow Skyrace for McLaughlin is the welcoming community. She recalls her first year completing the Triple Crown of events, which comprised the Ascent, 46k, and 23k races. Not only did she experience the thrill of the races, but she did so without injury—a significant achievement for any athlete. This euphoric experience has led her to return year after year.

Challenges and Adaptations

In preparation for the upcoming races, including the Ascent—a Mountain Running World Cup event—McLaughlin is mindful of her body’s signals. After facing hip issues leading up to her recent races, she is adjusting her race strategy. Shorter races can be less taxing on the body, which is beneficial for her recovery. In fact, these experiences have fueled her desire to keep pushing her limits while also being cautious.

Future Goals and Ambitions

With the 2025 season underway, McLaughlin is aiming to secure her spot on Team USA for the World Mountain Running Championships. The competitive field this year promises a blend of talented runners, including both seasoned athletes and promising newcomers. As the landscape of mountain running evolves, McLaughlin aims to remain relevant and competitive in a sport that is rapidly gaining attention.

Community and Growth in Mountain Running

The mountain running community is thriving, with more athletes emerging and the level of competition increasing. McLaughlin appreciates witnessing this dynamic change, particularly in shorter distances. Events like the Golden Trail World Series, which combine various talents and raise the profile of mountain running, encourage participation and excitement among fans and athletes alike.

Conclusion

As she prepares for the upcoming races at the Broken Arrow Skyrace in 2025, Allie McLaughlin remains focused on her passion for mountain running. With her experience, enthusiasm, and the support of her furry friends, she exemplifies the spirit of perseverance and growth in this exhilarating sport. Whether in training or competition, her dedication and love for mountain running continue to drive her forward.
