Planning test races during a training block is crucial for runners preparing for major events, and the introduction of the Hackney Legacy Half on March 16, 2025, is an excellent opportunity for those gearing up for spring marathons. This new half marathon, hosted in Victoria Park, East London, promises to serve as both a testing ground and a motivational boost for athletes targeting the London Marathon.

The Hackney Legacy Half is brought to life by founders Brad Farrant, leader of Track Mafia, and Marcus Brown, founder of the 1% Running Club and host of the A Runner’s Life podcast. Their vision stems from a personal desire to fill the gap left by the Big Half event’s shift to September—a change that hindered local runners from utilizing a shorter race as part of their marathon training strategy. As Brown shares, “Many of the runners we work with who are training for the London marathon haven’t even run a half before, so this race is designed to help them test fitness, practice pacing, and build confidence before the big day.”

The creation of the Hackney Legacy Half reflects the founders’ commitment to their community. Farrant and Brown, both raised in Hackney, aim to foster a collaboration with the Victoria Park Harriers. They emphasize that the local running community is now mature enough to embrace both diversity and performance. “Running fast is fun and a valuable tool for self-development, and no one should feel excluded from that,” Brown explained. Their goal is to create an event that is inclusive and accessible to all runners.

The race will take place at the Victoria Park Harriers and Tower Hamlets AC’s clubhouse, conveniently located at the northeast corner of Victoria Park. As Farrant notes, “Victoria Park is the centre of the Hackney and Tower Hamlets communities where Brad and I grew up. It’s the perfect place to host an event of this kind.” Engaging with local running clubs is essential to ensure the Hackney Legacy Half becomes a communal celebration of running.

Scheduled just six weeks prior to the London Marathon, this half marathon presents a vital opportunity for runners to gauge their fitness levels and adjust their training accordingly. “A half marathon six weeks out is the perfect launch pad. If it goes well, you know you’re on track, and if it doesn’t, you still have time to make adjustments,” Farrant remarked. The event encourages participants of varying skill levels to come out and test their limits, making it an attractive option for both seasoned athletes and those new to distance running.

The Hackney Legacy Half spans a fast and flat 13.1-mile course, certified and completely devoid of motor traffic. Runners will benefit from multiple aid stations, toilets, and cheer zones situated strategically throughout the lap course. The event also features pacing groups, prizes for top finishers, and unique, collectible T-shirts for all participants. Tickets are available at a cost of £35, and runners can register here.

Supported by local organizations such as Progress Run Club and Precision Fuel & Hydration, the Hackney Legacy Half emphasizes a community-focused spirit that resonates with runners. Not only does it seek to provide a platform for athletes to challenge themselves, but it also promotes the importance of local engagement and collaboration within the broader running landscape.
