As the spring marathon season shifts gears from Boston to London, all attention now centers on Jacob Kiplimo. The 24-year-old Ugandan distance star is set to make his much-anticipated marathon debut this Sunday at the 2025 TCS London Marathon.

Kiplimo’s Impressive Half-Marathon Background

Jacob Kiplimo, the current half-marathon world record holder, astounded the running community earlier this year with a remarkable time of 56:42 in Barcelona. This performance not only shattered records but also raised expectations for his marathon debut. If Kiplimo maintains a similar pace during the full race distance of 42.2 kilometers, he could potentially finish well under the elusive two-hour barrier—an unbroken mark in official marathon races. This has led to rampant speculation about whether we might witness a world record, or even a sub-two-hour attempt, in London.

Kiplimo’s Mindset Ahead of the Race

Despite the excitement surrounding his debut, Kiplimo remains grounded and focused. “On Sunday, I have to first run a good race before I start thinking about time,” he stated during an elite athlete press conference in London. “Against this deep field, I would be happy with making the podium.” His modest approach reflects a professional attitude in an environment filled with expectations.

The Current Landscape of Marathon Records

As it stands, the world marathon record is held by the late Kelvin Kiptum, who set an astounding time of 2:00:35 at the 2023 Chicago Marathon. Many analysts have identified Kiplimo as a potential successor to this record, with possibilities of breaking through the two-hour mark being discussed. However, both Kiplimo and his team have tempered expectations, calling for a more cautious approach.

“He has run extremely quick for the half, but we’re not talking about sub-two hours,” emphasized his agent, Federico Rosa. “I expect us to be somewhere around 2:01 or 2:02 in the men’s race.” This balanced perspective aims to set realistic goals as Kiplimo embarks on a challenging journey.

Training Regime and Preparation

Kiplimo’s transformation from a half-marathon prodigy to a marathon contender includes a significant increase in his training load. He has ramped up his weekly mileage from 120 km to 220 km, a strategic adjustment designed to prepare him thoroughly for this pivotal debut. Such dedicated training could offer insights into his ability to adapt to the longer race format.

Competitive Landscape

The 2025 London Marathon will not only feature Kiplimo; he will compete against a formidable group of athletes. Among them is the defending champion Alexander Mutiso, along with the four-time London Marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge and the 2024 Olympic gold medallist Tamirat Tola from Ethiopia. While these competitors may not possess Kiplimo’s exceptional speed, their extensive experience and tactical acumen could play crucial roles in this race.

How to Watch the London Marathon

Fans eager to witness this monumental race can tune into the coverage via FloTrack, which will begin at 3:30 a.m. ET. The elite women are set to start at 9 a.m. local time, followed by the elite men at 9:40 a.m. This timing allows audiences worldwide to engage with one of the sport’s most anticipated events.

Conclusion

With the spring marathon season in full swing, all eyes are on Jacob Kiplimo as he prepares for his debut at the 2025 TCS London Marathon. A blend of exceptional talent, recent record-breaking performances, and careful preparation makes him a compelling figure to watch. Whether he shatters records or simply makes a strong showing, Kiplimo’s journey is sure to captivate long-distance running enthusiasts. Stay tuned for what is bound to be an unforgettable event.
