Exploring Icefall Lodge: A Backcountry Skiing Adventure

After five exhilarating days at Icefall Lodge, located in the stunning backcountry of British Columbia, guests are invited to focus as they wrap up their morning meal. Owner and lead guide, Larry Dolecki, a charismatic figure in his late 50s, casually informs the group of the day’s conditions. “The good news is, it’s 1 degree warmer today,” he cheerfully announces, noting the temperature hovering around -14°C. For many skiers, understanding Celsius may feel irrelevant when faced with the reality of frigid outdoor excursions. However, it serves as a reminder for everyone to layer up and prepare for another day of exploration.

A Closer Look at Icefall Lodge

Icefall Lodge is a heli-accessed backcountry retreat near Donald, British Columbia, offering an authentic and budget-friendly escape from modern distractions. This secluded lodge provides its guests with the basics: heated only by a solitary wood stove, devoid of cell service and internet, and lacking indoor plumbing beyond composting toilets. Here, adventure comes from skiing the untouched snow instead of indulging in luxury accommodations. The lodge’s simplicity encourages camaraderie among guests, fostering a shared appreciation for the rugged wilderness that envelops them.

A Sense of Community

For some, like the author, trips to Icefall Lodge become a tradition. A prior visit to its sister lodge, Snowfall Lodge, brought together a group of women from diverse backgrounds, culminating in a close-knit experience that remains unique and unforgettable. Gathering again at Icefall, the atmosphere is warm and familiar; guests greet each other with enthusiasm, reminiscing about past adventures and enduring friendships. Each morning begins with yoga and problem solving, as they prepare for the day’s skiing challenges guided by Larry’s knowledgeable leadership.

The Experience of Ski Touring

During the initial days, skiing activity centers around manageable terrain, allowing time for careful transitions between warm-up routines and downhill descents. Ski touring, the sequential practice of climbing and descending snow-covered slopes, poses challenges that require both caution and self-care. As guests navigate their surroundings, conversations flow freely, resulting in deeper connections that enrich the experience. Every pitch skied is preceded by thoughtful layers of preparation to ensure safety in the cold climate, an essential practice for any serious skier.

A Tribute to Adventure and Resilience

As the group progresses through their skiing itinerary, conversations often drift towards a mutual acquaintance, Hilaree Nelson, a renowned mountaineer whose legacy inspires many skiers. As they navigate difficult moments, recalling her achievements fosters camaraderie and resilience, reinforcing the spirit of adventure. Turning moments of difficulty into opportunities for storytelling and connection, the group reflects not only on their shared experiences but also the broader challenge of outdoor exploration.

Breaking Boundaries and Embracing Challenges

With the temperatures finally rising and clearer skies on the horizon, Larry announces additional skiing options, including routes that lead toward exhilarating slopes like Groove Tube and Springboard. The playful, mostly female-focused nature of the group brings lightness to the experience, enabling open discussions about their individual skiing journeys. This trip transcends mere skiing; it builds confidence and encourages participants to embrace their boundaries while understanding their limits.

Final Days at Icefall Lodge

As the final skiing day arrives, the group sets out for Springboard, a route promising incredible views and exhilarating pitches. Conversations during the ascent highlight how outdoor adventures can serve as therapeutic spaces for healing, connecting with nature, and sharing personal stories. As the expedition wraps up, and skiers enjoy the sense of accomplishment, they transition back to the lodge. Here, amidst laughter and the comfort of shared experiences, guests bond over steaming bowls of soup and chilled drinks, celebrating their encounters with the snowy wilderness of British Columbia.

For those interested in backcountry skiing, Icefall Lodge offers a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in nature while enjoying the support and camaraderie of fellow adventurers. Find out more about Icefall Lodge and plan your next ski getaway for an unforgettable experience in the wilderness!
