Laelanie Larach: A Rising Star in Coastal Art
Miami-based artist Laelanie Larach has made a notable impact on the local art scene with her distinctive style of abstract oil paintings, often referred to as “coastal art.” Her pieces, characterized by vibrant colors and captivating designs, have gained increasing recognition in South Florida, making her a prominent figure in the community.
Recognition at the Miami Marathon
As her reputation flourished, Larach was approached by the Life Time Miami Marathon for an exciting opportunity. The marathon organizers decided to search for an artist to design a medal ribbon for their upcoming event scheduled for February 2, 2025. It was through an article showcasing Larach’s work as an emerging talent that staff members discovered her artistic flair.
An Artistic Honor
Thrilled by the prospect, Larach embraced the challenge of creating a design that would symbolize the race while reflecting the vibrant spirit of Miami. “What an honor that they chose me to create a painting that represents the Marathon and the vibe of Miami, everything that is Tropical,” Larach expressed. This milestone represents an unforgettable moment in her career, showcasing her work to over 18,000 participants on race day.
Art Meets Community Spirit
The medal designed by Larach will highlight the interconnectedness of runners who come together in Miami each year. This year’s event aims to celebrate the spirit of community, as well as the contributions each participant has made to the Marathon’s legacy. According to Samantha Bailey, Miami Marathon Senior Marketing Manager, “Laelanie’s work represents the intricacies featured in the design of the medal, symbolizing how each participant contributes a piece to the whole.”
From Honduras to Miami: An Artistic Journey
Born in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, Larach’s journey to becoming an artist began at the young age of eight. Her mother, a teacher, often involved her in creating cartoon illustrations for her students. Inspired by Honduras’s stunning landscapes, Larach transitioned from pastels and watercolors to the vibrant medium of oil on canvas after winning early art contests. Today, her art has evolved into a more coastal and modern style, portraying bright sunsets and palm trees reminiscent of both her childhood and her experiences in Miami.
Tropical Sunsets and Palm Trees
For the Miami Marathon, Larach drew from her original 36-inch by 36-inch oil painting titled “Tropical Sunsets and Palm Trees.” The artwork encapsulates the spirited essence of Miami through its portrayal of dynamic palm trees that sway gracefully under a clear blue sky, dancing along with ocean waves. “The concept is tropical, showcasing movement and energy,” Larach notes about her vibrant creation.
The Event and Its Impact
Set against the backdrop of Miami’s breathtaking cityscape and waterways, participants from 50 states and over 70 countries will partake in the USTAF-certified, Boston-qualifying course. The weekend will start with the Miami Famous Expo, featuring live entertainment and a variety of vendors on January 31 and February 1, 2025, followed by the Life Time Tropical 5K on February 1, and the full Marathon and Half Marathon on February 2. Last year’s event generated a significant local economic impact of $16.1 million, attracting almost equal numbers of international and local participants.
