Record Participation Expected at BTR Liverpool Half Marathon

This weekend, Liverpool is poised to welcome a remarkable crowd of 12,000 participants for the BTR Liverpool Half Marathon, marking its biggest race in history. The 31st anniversary of this cherished event will take place on Sunday, March 23rd, alongside the 10th annual 10 Mile Road Race. This surge in registrations represents a significant increase from previous years, showcasing the growing popularity of the event in the region.

The half marathon, which is now sold out with 11,500 entries, reached capacity eight weeks ahead of race day. Meanwhile, the 10-mile race filled its 500 slots by early January. Both events will commence at 9 AM from the iconic Pier Head Liverpool, with a collective start line of 12,000 runners—a record-breaking figure for BTR Liverpool. This year’s entries reflect a substantial rise from last year’s 9,000 registrations, which sold out just three weeks prior to the event.

The routes for both races promise a memorable experience, starting and finishing at Pier Head Liverpool. The half marathon spans 13.1 miles, leading participants through the city’s renowned landmarks, including Liverpool Cathedral and the Royal Albert Dock. Runners in the 10-mile category will turn back earlier at Sefton Park, allowing for a unique yet equally scenic journey. All racers will finish along Otterspool Prom, concluding their runs with the distinctive backdrop of the Liver Birds and Three Graces.

Fulfilling its role as the Official Charity Partner, the North West Air Ambulance aims to raise awareness and funds during the event. Participants and spectators can look forward to witnessing inspiring stories, including that of Georgia Addy, a survivor whose life was saved by the air ambulance service nine years ago. Georgia will be given the honor of starting the race, alongside Liverpool’s Lord Mayor, Councillor Richard Kemp. The North West Air Ambulance relies heavily on donations, needing to gather over £18 million annually to operate effectively.

As the event draws near, notable partnerships have emerged to amplify the experience for runners and fans alike. Vimto Energy Zero, new to the event this year, will provide participants with refreshments. Additionally, Barry’s Liverpool has joined as the Official Training Partner for 2025, offering valuable fitness resources for race preparation. Attendees can expect to interact with dedicated teams from both companies, enhancing the race atmosphere.

The BTR Liverpool Half Marathon holds a significant place in the region’s sporting calendar as one of the longest-standing premier road races since its inception in 1994. Beyond providing a platform for competitive running, the event also contributes to the local economy, benefiting hospitality venues and tourism in the area. Participants hail from different countries worldwide, further underscoring the race’s international appeal.

In addition to the excitement of the races, the event also carries a strong humanitarian spirit, with family members of victims from last year’s Southport tragedy participating to honor their loved ones and raise awareness for their causes. The race day is expected to be filled with support from running clubs, families, and friends, creating a vibrant community atmosphere that echoes the spirit of Liverpool.

For those looking to get involved, registration is still open for BTR Liverpool’s future events, including various races scheduled for 2025. Interested participants can find more information and sign up through the official website. This commitment to inclusive and accessible events underscores BTR Liverpool’s dedication to promoting health and wellness through running.
