As runners prepare for the 2025 London Marathon this Sunday, the anticipation is palpable. With the marathon being one of the largest in the world, the excitement surrounding the event continues to grow.

The Ballot for the 2026 London Marathon

On April 25, 2025, the ballot for the 2026 London Marathon officially opened, inviting enthusiastic runners to step up to the challenge. Those interested in the thrilling 26.2-mile journey through the streets of London have until May 2 to enter. This exciting opportunity attracts runners from all backgrounds, and the previous year’s ballot saw a record-breaking 840,000 applications, making it the most popular marathon globally.

What to Expect in 2026

Set for April 26, 2026, the marathon promises a vibrant atmosphere that is characteristic of London. Chief Executive of London Marathon Events, Hugh Brasher, emphasized the unique inclusivity of the event. He stated, “The London Marathon is one of the most iconic and inclusive sporting events in the UK and is unique in the fact that anyone can be part of it.” Runners not only have the chance to compete alongside elite athletes but also to be cheered on by thousands of spectators, creating a community-driven experience.

How to Register for the 2026 Race

Those wishing to participate can sign up through a public ballot system, where winners are drawn randomly. If you’re a UK resident and decide to donate your entry fee to support the [London Marathon Foundation](https://www.tcslondonmarathon.com/inside-lme/london-marathon-foundation), your fee will be reduced from £79.99 to £49.99. It’s a win-win situation that not only allows you to secure a spot but also contributes to a worthy cause.

What If You Don’t Obtain a Spot?

If you don’t secure a position in the initial ballot, hope is far from lost. Participants will automatically be entered into a secondary draw, effectively doubling their chances of running in this prestigious marathon. The results of the ballot will be communicated to applicants via email in July 2025, with details on checking junk folders for any missed confirmations. For those who are unsuccessful in both ballots, they will receive a premium winter running top valued at £60, and their entry fee will be donated to the London Marathon Foundation.

Other Notable Marathons in the UK

If the London Marathon doesn’t pan out for you, there are numerous other marathons around the UK to consider. From the Manchester Marathon, known as one of the flattest and friendliest, to the scenic vistas offered by the Great Welsh Marathon in Llanelli, options abound. Alternatively, the Brighton Marathon takes place just weeks before London, and the Edinburgh Marathon is renowned for its flat terrain, making it appealing for those gearing up for their first marathon.

A Community Celebration

Not only does the marathon provide a platform for personal achievements, but it also serves as a means to raise substantial funds for charities. Since its inception in 1981, participants have collectively raised over £1 billion for various causes. This sense of community spirit and inclusion is what makes the London Marathon unique. It’s not just a race; it’s a celebration of resilience, teamwork, and support.

Get Involved!

For those who plan to take part in the 2026 London Marathon, entering the ballot now could be the first step in an unforgettable journey. Whether you’re an avid runner or someone who is contemplating taking on this challenge for the first time, the allure of the London Marathon is undeniable. With thousands flocking to the streets cheering on participants, the atmosphere is electric, making it a day like no other.
