Alex Yee: From Triathlon Champion to London Marathon Contender

This year’s London Marathon is set to witness an exciting new competitor: Alex Yee, the Olympic triathlon champion. The 26-year-old British athlete is putting his multisport career on hold temporarily to tackle his first marathon, marking a significant milestone in his athletic journey.

Pursuing Marathon Goals

Yee has expressed that this marathon experience offers him a golden chance to enhance his run speed, which he identifies as his strongest asset in triathlon competitions. With a background as the British 10,000m champion, Yee aims to build on his track experience and bring that prowess to the longer distance of the marathon.

Aiming High with Performance Targets

Yee’s personal best (PB) of 27:51 for the 10km track race showcases his impressive running speed. Recently, he recorded a time of 28:07 on the roads in Valencia, which raises the potential for an impressive marathon debut. Using an age-grading calculator, experts suggest that he could aim for a marathon time around 2:09, a target he is eyeing for this upcoming London Marathon.

The Learning Journey Ahead

In a recent interview on the Unplugged podcast for Sigma Sports, Yee spoke candidly about his marathon aspirations. He noted, “I think sub 2 hours 10 I would be satisfied with and happy with.” However, he acknowledges that the true challenge lies in the latter stages of a marathon, particularly from 20 to 26 miles, where physical exhaustion can set in. This will be Yee’s first experience with such sustained pavement pounding over such an extended distance.

Focus on Long-Term Development

For Yee, it’s not just about hitting a time; it’s about long-term improvement in his running capabilities. He believes that the marathon will help him elevate his lactate threshold speeds, enabling him to perform better in triathlon events upon his return. “This is purely about the improvement of running and I feel like that is something I’ve really wanted to do all my life,” he stated, emphasizing his dedication to continual development. The London Marathon holds special significance for Yee, as he recalls childhood memories of watching elite runners compete.

Training Strategies and Preparations

As he gears up for the marathon, Yee plans to participate in a half marathon race to gauge his current lactate threshold levels in an authentic racing environment. Following that, his training will focus on building speed and muscle conditioning, essential components for marathon preparation. “It’s got to be done to know you’re going to be ready,” he explained, articulating his philosophy of making training as challenging as the actual race.

Anticipation and Excitement for the Event

As he embarks on this new challenge, Yee feels both excitement and a sense of adventure. He acknowledges that while the final stages of the marathon might be grueling, the experience overall promises to be enriching and enjoyable. “I think the important thing from that is learning,” Yee concluded, indicating his openness to the journey that lies ahead and the insights he hopes to gain through this daring transition from triathlon to marathon running.
