West Cork is becoming a vibrant hub for outdoor enthusiasts, offering an array of activities that cater to various fitness levels, from leisurely walks to challenging races. Whether you’re seeking a scenic stroll along the coast or aiming for a personal best in competitive running, this region has something for everyone. Engaging in these events is an excellent way to motivate oneself on a ‘Get Active’ journey while connecting with the community. The calendar is packed with exciting opportunities, making it easier than ever to find an event that inspires you. Check out the full Get Active 2025 supplement for more details.

Weekly Adventures: Parkrun in West Cork

Every Saturday morning, community spirit comes alive with Parkrun events across West Cork. Parkrun is a free, 5k event that welcomes participants to walk, jog, run, or volunteer. With over 150 Parkrun locations in Ireland, the four West Cork venues—Clonakilty, Castlehaven (Rineen Woods), Glengarriff, and Bere Island—are particularly popular. These events not only promote fitness but also foster social connections, as participants often gather post-run for refreshments and conversations. To join, only a one-time registration for a personal barcode is required, tracking progress week by week.

Highlighting February: Tommy Ryan Memorial and Kinsale 10-Mile Road Race

February brings exciting running events for local athletes. The Tommy Ryan Memorial 5-Mile Road Race, hosted in Carrigaline by Eagle AC, is a notable event that draws runners for its competitive atmosphere and philanthropic cause, with entry fees supporting local charities. The following week features the Kinsale 10-Mile Road Race, a challenging event that honors the late Jamie McCarthy, a remarkable runner. This certified race allows only runners aged 18 and over, showcasing the region’s commitment to maintaining high fitness standards while paying homage to its rich history in athletics.

Spring Forward: March and April Events

March marks the Garrettstown 5-Mile Road Race, which routes through breathtaking landscapes between Ballinspittle, Garrettstown, and Garrylucas beaches. The scenic nature of the race is compounded by its capacity for participants, encouraging early registration to secure a spot. Additionally, April sees the renowned Sheep’s Head Ultra-Marathon, a 50k challenge ideal for seasoned runners. This event provides participants with exhilarating views of Bantry Bay while testing their limits with a significant elevation gain.

Diverse Offerings: Multi-Terrain Events and Charity Drives

As summer approaches, the Surf, Turf ‘n’ Tar event, held in Rosscarbery, combines road and trail running with walking options, appealing to fitness enthusiasts of various abilities. The event is particularly special for food lovers, featuring local culinary delights post-race. Summer also brings opportunities for charitable engagements, such as the popular Darkness into Light event dedicated to mental health awareness. This annual event involves a 5k walk or run, taking place at dawn as a show of solidarity for those facing mental health challenges.

Thrills of Summer: Cycling and Swimming Events

Summer months shine with particularly adventurous activities. The Ring of Beara Cycle attracts cyclists from all over, offering routes of 110km and 140km through stunning countryside. Post-event assessments have consistently shown that this fundraiser significantly benefits local charities. Similarly, the Union Hall Swim supports the RNLI, raising areas on two distances and uniting the community through a love for water sports. Both events highlight the commitment of West Cork’s active community to support valuable causes while enjoying the great outdoors.

The Thriving Community Spirit of West Cork

In conclusion, West Cork stands out as a dynamic destination for outdoor activities, encouraging diverse populations to engage in fitness and community service. The numerous events throughout the year, from Parkruns to ultra-marathons and charity events, foster a strong sense of togetherness and promote health and fitness. Whether you’re looking to participate competitively or simply to enjoy nature while socializing, West Cork has plenty to offer.
