Unveiling a New Era in Coastal Running Events
The National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC) is setting ambitious plans to establish Preah Sihanouk province as the host of the region’s largest coastal running event. Announced during the successful 10th International Half Marathon held on March 30, this initiative aims to leverage the province’s scenic coastal routes and robust infrastructure to attract even more participants.
Record Participation and a Successful Event
This year’s half marathon was a remarkable achievement, drawing over 4,000 athletes from 48 countries, marking a new record for participation in the past decade. Vath Chamroeun, secretary-general of NOCC, highlighted the excellent cooperation from the provincial administration, which ensured security and a smooth experience for all runners.
The Appeal of Preah Sihanouk
Chamroeun noted the benefits of organizing such events in Preah Sihanouk, pointing to the area’s favorable running conditions—cool morning weather and fresh sea breezes— that enhance the overall experience. “These aspects have certainly left a lasting impression on runners, encouraging them to return for future events,” he stated.
A Boost for Tourism and Local Economy
According to provincial governor Mang Sineth, the successful organization of the half marathon plays a crucial role in promoting tourism within Preah Sihanouk. He expressed hope for more similar events in the future, underlining that such sporting endeavors contribute not only to public health but also to fostering friendships while attracting tourists to the region.
Future Ambitions: Transforming the Half Marathon
Looking ahead, NOCC aims to transform the International Half Marathon into the largest running event in ASEAN. Chamroeun emphasized that while renowned events like the Phuket Marathon and Da Nang Marathon currently dominate the scene, Preah Sihanouk’s picturesque coastal infrastructure gives it a competitive edge. Over the next five years, the goal is to attract over 10,000 international runners to the event.
Strategic Partnerships to Boost Participation
To achieve this ambitious goal, NOCC is planning collaborations with international marathons, including the Xiamen Marathon in China, which sees tens of thousands of runners. Such partnerships will encourage participants from these events to join the International Half Marathon in Preah Sihanouk, promising them an organized and unforgettable experience.
A Commitment to Development and Growth
Chamroeun reiterated the commitment of NOCC to promote sports events aligned with the Royal Government’s vision under Prime Minister Hun Manet. “We aim to bolster the economy through sports, as these gatherings significantly support the informal economy and the tourism sector,” he concluded. As the region continues to invest in its infrastructure, Preah Sihanouk is poised to become a premier destination for coastal running events.
