2024 Ultra-Trail Kosciuszko: Stanley and Harvey Shine in Challenging Conditions

The 2024 Ultra-Trail Kosciuszko by UTMB witnessed an exhilarating display of endurance and skill as Sabrina Stanley from the USA and Sam Harvey from New Zealand clinched the titles in the 100-mile KosciMiler race held in the breathtaking Snowy Mountains of New South Wales. This event is part of the larger UTMB World Series, featuring some of the toughest ultramarathon distances that attract athletes from across the globe.

Stanley Dominates in the Women’s Race

Sabrina Stanley showcased her extraordinary talent, leading the women’s KosciMiler race from start to finish. She crossed the finish line with an impressive time of 19:51:08, nearly 90 minutes ahead of her closest competitor, Steph Auston from Australia, who finished in 20:59:23. Stanley’s performance was not only remarkable for its dominance but also significant as she achieved her goal of securing qualification for the much-coveted UTMB World Series Finals in Chamonix, France, set for 2025.

Overcoming Adversities

Despite the challenging alpine weather, which fluctuated throughout the race, Stanley expressed immense satisfaction with her performance. “I had a really good day out there,” she remarked, reflecting on the demanding nature of the course that included the last grueling 20 kilometers. Nonetheless, her enthusiasm for the scenic beauty of the route, including Mt. Kosciuszko, was evident. “The scenery was so beautiful and blew my expectations away,” she added, underscoring her connection to the landscape as part of her racing experience.

Auston and Gilmour-Walsh Round Out the Podium

Emily Gilmour-Walsh also made a strong showing, finishing third in the women’s KosciMiler with a time of 23:05:35, marking an improvement from her previous year’s fifth-place finish. This year’s race not only highlighted Stanley’s prowess but also served as a platform for emerging talents like Gilmour-Walsh. With their performances, all three podium finishers secured direct entries into the prestigious 2025 UTMB.

Harvey Takes the Lead in the Men’s Race

In the men’s category, Sam Harvey battled both mental and physical hurdles to finish first, clocking in at 16:38:19. He outstripped second-place finisher Luke Nichols, who completed the race in 19:04:29, and third-place Nigel Hill, who followed closely with a time of 19:26:30. Harvey’s victory was particularly strategic; he worked alongside fellow competitor Mike Carroll in the early stages of the race, which allowed them to conserve energy and gain on the leading pack.

Dynamic Race Conditions Challenge Competitors

Adverse weather forced organizers to pause the KosciMiler and Kosci100 races for roughly two hours. This safety measure caused a disruption but ultimately allowed for a fair assessment of final results, which were adjusted accordingly. Harvey commented on the unique dynamics of ultramarathon racing, stating, “You’ve just got to solve all those problems one at a time. I solved problems the most.” This approach proved valuable for him on the day of the race as he navigated the tumultuous conditions.

Conclusion: A Defining Ultra-Trail Event

The 2024 Ultra-Trail Kosciuszko by UTMB ultimately showcased the importance of resilience, strategy, and passion in ultra-endurance sports. Both Hanna Stanley and Sam Harvey not only exemplified athletic excellence but also reflected the spirit of camaraderie that defines the ultrarunning community. As both champions gear up for the next challenges on their race calendars, they leave behind a legacy of impressive performances that inspire fellow athletes around the world to take on the rigorous test of the UTMB World Series.
