The Rising Global Appeal of the TCS Sydney Marathon

The TCS Sydney Marathon has seen an extraordinary surge in international applications, attracting an impressive eight-fold increase compared to the previous year. This year’s ballot garnered runners from 156 countries, a notable jump from 101 countries in 2024. Among the participants, the United States led the pack, followed closely by Indonesia, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, and China. This dramatic increase underscores the marathon’s growing reputation as a premier global running event.

As part of this international influx, many runners are motivated by the pursuit of completing all seven World Marathon Majors. Interestingly, 23% of applicants are newcomers, looking to run their very first marathon. This blend of seasoned marathoners and enthusiastic newcomers adds a vibrant dynamic to the event, fostering a sense of camaraderie among participants from diverse backgrounds.

In November 2024, the New South Wales (NSW) Government officially elevated the TCS Sydney Marathon to the status of the seventh Abbott World Marathon Major. The marathon now joins an esteemed list that includes the London, Berlin, Tokyo, Boston, Chicago, and New York marathons. This designation not only enhances the event’s prestige but also positions NSW as a key destination for marathon enthusiasts and their supporters.

The anticipated economic impact of the TCS Sydney Marathon is significant, with estimates suggesting an injection of $73 million into the NSW economy over the next three years. Participating runners and their supporters are expected to explore Sydney and its surrounding regions, stimulating local businesses including shops, hotels, and restaurants. This influx of visitors aligns with the government’s broader goal of boosting tourism and job creation.

The NSW Government’s strategy focuses on leveraging major international sporting events to enhance the visitor economy, with an updated target set at $91 billion in annual visitor expenditure by 2035. By investing in key events such as the TCS Sydney Marathon, the UFC, and the 2027 Men’s Rugby Union World Cup, the government aims to create new jobs and promote economic growth across the state.

The TCS Sydney Marathon’s remarkable journey reflects a significant growth trajectory. In just three years, the number of entrants has surged from 5,306 in 2022 to 24,246 in 2024. Following the recent notification of successful entrants for 2025, those who were not selected still have opportunities to participate through the Official Charity Partner Program or the Domestic and International Travel Program. For those interested in shorter races, registration for the 4.2km and 10km events will open in April.

Support from Destination NSW, the state’s tourism and major events agency, has been instrumental in the marathon’s success. According to Minister for Jobs and Tourism, John Graham, the overwhelming response to the marathon ballot solidifies the event’s potential to enhance the local economy. With the backdrop of iconic landmarks like the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House, the marathon promises to showcase the city’s beauty to a global audience, reinforcing Sydney’s status as a premier travel destination.

As TCS Sydney Marathon Race Director Wayne Larden aptly put it, this milestone is a turning point that will not only boost participation but also significantly benefit local businesses. With a vibrant atmosphere anticipated, inspired by similar marathons around the world that attract millions of spectators, Sydney is set to shine on the global stage.
