Understanding UNI Dance Marathon: Making a Difference “For the Kids”

UNI Dance Marathon is a prominent student organization at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI), dedicated to raising funds for children’s hospitals. With over a decade of history on campus, it has become the largest student-led initiative at UNI. The driving force behind this movement is encapsulated in the phrase, “For the Kids.” This powerful motto reflects their mission to provide crucial support and comfort to families impacted by childhood illnesses. As stated by Anna Nydegger, the external director of UNI Dance Marathon, the organization aims to make a positive impact on those affected.

The Big Event: A Day of Dance and Fundraising

The pinnacle of UNI Dance Marathon’s efforts is the highly anticipated Big Event, a 12-hour fundraiser filled with a variety of activities designed to engage students and raise funds for the Stead Family Children’s Hospital in Iowa City. This year, the Big Event is set to take place on Saturday, March 1, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. held entirely at Maucker Union. Participants will be dancing every hour, joined by various fundraising activities, demonstrating their commitment to supporting families in need. Nydegger highlighted that the event goes beyond just dancing, featuring a hair-cutting hour and a power hour focused on maximizing fundraising efforts.

More Than Just Dancing: The Miracle Gala

Another cherished event organized by UNI Dance Marathon is the Miracle Gala, which Nydegger describes as reminiscent of high school prom or homecoming. This elegant gathering allows families to share their inspiring stories while attendees enjoy an entertaining evening. Importantly, 100% of the proceeds from the Gala go directly to support the children’s hospital, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to its cause while providing a fun and meaningful experience for attendees.

Upcoming Events to Support the Cause

In addition to the Big Event and the Miracle Gala, UNI Dance Marathon hosts various other fundraising events throughout the year. One upcoming highlight is the “Stacks for Stead” event scheduled for January 27 from 5-7 p.m. at St. Stephen’s. For a small fee of five dollars, students can enjoy unlimited pancakes, contributing to the fundraising efforts while coming together for a delicious meal. Events like these not only raise funds but also foster a sense of community among participants.

Inclusive Participation: Your Major Doesn’t Matter

UNI Dance Marathon prides itself on inclusivity, welcoming students from all academic disciplines. Nydegger emphasizes that potential participants do not need to be in education-related majors or have prior experience with children to contribute positively. The skills and experiences gained through involvement in Dance Marathon can be beneficial across various fields of study, from marketing to event planning. This open approach encourages a diverse group of students to join, reinforcing the organization’s community-driven spirit.

Collaborative Efforts to Unite Students

To expand its reach and engage more students, UNI Dance Marathon collaborates with other student organizations on campus. Recently, they partnered with the UNI Pickleball Club to host a pickleball tournament, fostering camaraderie through friendly competition. These collaborative events attract students who may not be familiar with Dance Marathon, encouraging them to become involved in a meaningful cause.

Recovery and Resilience Post-Pandemic

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic posed significant challenges for student organizations, including UNI Dance Marathon. However, in recent years, the organization has seen a promising increase in participation. Nydegger notes that students are increasingly eager to get involved, evidenced by the large turnout of freshmen looking to join organizations on campus. The renewed enthusiasm from younger students is encouraging, indicating a bright future for UNI Dance Marathon as it continues to support families affected by childhood illness.
