Weini Kelati Breaks American Half Marathon Record Again

Weini Kelati, the rising star in American long-distance running, has once again made headlines by breaking the American half marathon record at the Houston Half Marathon. On January 19, the 28-year-old finished the race with a time of 1:06:09, marking a significant 16-second improvement from her previous record set the prior year. Kelati’s accomplishments not only spotlight her individual talent but also highlight the increasing competitiveness within women’s distance running in the U.S.

The race saw Kelati compete against a formidable field, including the 19-year-old Ethiopian runner Senayet Getachew, who ultimately claimed victory with a remarkable time of 1:06:05. Buze Diriba, another Ethiopian athlete, secured third place with a time of 1:06:48. American Amanda Vestri, in only her second half marathon, finished a respectable fourth with a time of 1:07:35. This race exemplified a thrilling competition that further emphasizes the dynamism in the sport.

Kelati faced several challenges during the race, including frigid temperatures and fierce wind gusts reaching up to 30 miles per hour. Despite these conditions, she managed to push through the discomfort. Kelati reported that her stomach started to bother her around the halfway point, nearly compromising her performance. Nevertheless, her determination fueled her to break her own record of 1:06:25 set the previous year, showcasing her resilience and competitive spirit.

“The goal was just to run hard from the beginning and try to see how fast I can go, and that’s what I did,” Kelati stated after the race. Her aggressive strategy paid off as she led a small pack of elite runners, completing the first 5K in an impressive 15:30, well ahead of her competitors. This bold pace not only set the stage for Kelati’s record-breaking performance but also created an exhilarating atmosphere among spectators and fellow racers.

As the race progressed, Kelati and her rivals continued to push their limits. However, by the time they reached the 15K mark, the earlier pace took its toll, leading to some separation among the runners. Although Kelati was on track to finish significantly faster than the previous American record, Diriba began to fall off the lead pace. Despite this, Kelati intuitively maintained her speed, securing a record-breaking split time of 50:05 for the 10-mile stretch, surpassing the previous American record of 50:52 set by Molly Huddle in 2018.

In the final mile of the race, Getachew made a decisive move to pull ahead of Kelati, ultimately taking first place. Though she couldn’t match Getachew’s surge, Kelati showcased her endurance by finishing strong and successfully shattering her own American record. Her continuous improvement on the flat, fast Houston course underscores the benefits this venue offers for aspiring and professional runners alike.

Kelati’s remarkable journey in the past year has included breaking records and achieving personal bests in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters, culminating in her eighth-place finish at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. In addition to her well-deserved second-place prize of $8,000, Kelati also received a $10,000 bonus for her record-setting performance. As she continues to break barriers in American long-distance running, the future looks bright for Weini Kelati as she inspires a new generation of athletes.
